Insights about the Salesian Sisters of Don Bosco

The Salesian Sisters of Don Bosco FMA started their journey of educating young minds spiritually and intellectually from the year 1922. The Salesian sisters are dedicated to evangelizing young people through education and care following the charism of Saint John Bosco and Saint Mary Mazzarello.

The first batch of six Salesian sisters landed in the Indian soil and planted the charism at Tanjore in Tamil Nadu in 1922. In 1926 St. Francis Xavier’s Convent, Broadway, Madras (now Chennai) and in 1928 St. Mary`s convent, Vellore in the district of North Arcot (now Vellore district) were founded. The Province of St. Thomas the Apostle was canonically erected in 1946 with the Provincial house at Broadway, Madras. Affectionately called the Mother Province, it gave birth to the province of Thailand in 1952, Shillong province in1953, Mumbai province in 1982 and Bangalore province in 1993. Shillong was bifurcated into Kolkotta and Guwahati provinces later. Thus we have now six provinces in India with their provincialate at Chennai, Shillong, Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkotta and Guwahati.
